Prayer for the City & Church: Jan 17-23
January 20th, 2011 by Stephanie
As we continue through our sermon series on The Church and its function in the City, this week’s prayer focus is on the renewal and redemption of our city and church.
Prayer for the Church:
- Pray that we would seek to be a church that is repentant and rejoicing as Matthew 5:1-17 describes. That we would learn to see our sin as hateful and would turn from it in genuine conviction and repentance.
- Pray for the leaders of our church – pastors, elders, staff, GG leaders, ministry leaders – that they would lead by repentance, authenticity, humility and dependence on the Lord. Pray for wisdom and integrity as they make decisions that affect the entire church community.
Upcoming Events in the Church:
- Newcomer’s Lunch – (Jan 23) Pray that this would be a place where those who are new could come and get to know Grace Toronto better, as well as find opportunities to get involved and invest in the work God is doing in our city.
- Congregational Meeting – (Feb 6) Pray for wisdom for the elders to know how to communicate the vision and direction of the church for 2011 to the congregation. Pray that this would be the start of a year of deep spiritual growth, maturity and unity within our church.
- Living Mercifully in an Unmerciful City – (Begins Feb 6) Pray for the speakers to be filled with wisdom in how to share about reaching the broken and needy in our city. Pray for open hearts towards mercy ministry and that we would become a congregation filled with mercy-minded people who seek to live a lifestyle of compassion and mercy towards others.
Prayer for the City:
- Pray for our city to become the picture of that city in Matthew 5:1-7 that describes it as a ‘Repentant City’ and a ‘Rejoicing City’ – that Toronto would be transformed, redeemed and renewed to be a place that upholds Christ as Ruler of the city.
- Pray that the city would become renewed in its brokenness – for situations like the death of Sergeant Ryan Russell to awaken us to the reality of our broken condition and that we are in need of being redeemed from the inside out. Pray for Sergeant Russell’s family and their healing and comfort in the midst of their loss.
‘You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.’
(Matthew 5:13-16)
