GOD CALLS

CALL TO WORSHIP

—from Psalm 86:8-10, NRSV

LEADER:

There is none like you, O Lord,

nor are there any works like yours.

ALL:

All the nations you have made shall come

and bow down before you, O Lord,

and shall glorify your name.

For you are great and do wondrous things,

you alone are God.

SONG - FOR ALL YOU'VE DONE

(© 2004 Hillsong Publishing. CCLI # 4254689)

My Saviour Redeemer

Lifted me from the miry clay

Almighty forever

I will never be the same

'Cause You came near

From the everlasting

To the world we live

The Father's only Son

And You lived and You died

And You rose again on high

And You opened the way

For the world to live again

Hallelujah for all You've done

SONG - COME THOU FONT

(© Public Domain. CCLI # 108389.)

Come Thou fount of every blessing

Tune my heart to sing Thy grace

Streams of mercy never ceasing

Call for songs of loudest praise

Teach me some melodious sonnet

Sung by flaming tongues above

Praise the mount I'm fixed upon it

Mount of God's unchanging love

Here I raise my Ebenezer

Hither by Thy help I come

And I hope by Thy good pleasure

Safely to arrive at home

Jesus sought me when a stranger

Wand'ring from the fold of God

He to rescue me from danger

Interposed His precious blood

Oh to grace how great a debtor

Daily I'm constrained to be

Let thy grace Lord like a fetter

Bind my wand'ring heart to Thee

Prone to wander Lord I feel it

Prone to leave the God I love

Here's my heart Lord take and seal it

Seal it for Thy courts above

SONG - HOW GREAT IS OUR GOD

(© 2004 worshiptogether.com songs, sixsteps Music, and Alletrop Music. CCLI # 4348399)

The splendour of the King

Clothed in majesty

Let all the earth rejoice

All the earth rejoice

He wraps Himself in light

And darkness tries to hide

And trembles at His voice

And trembles at His voice

How great is our God

Sing with me

How great is our God

And all will see how great

How great is our God

And age to age He stands

And time is in His hands

Beginning and the End

Beginning and the End

The Godhead three in one

Father Spirit Son

The Lion and the Lamb

The Lion and the Lamb

Name above all names

Worthy of all praise

My heart will sing

How great is our God

GOD CLEANSES

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

—based on Daniel 9:4-19

LEADER:

O Lord, great God,

all holy, Father most gracious,

filled with mercy and steadfast love,

we are embarrassed to come before you,

for we have preferred the ways of this world to your ways,

for we have rebelled against your wisdom

and we have gotten into trouble,

for we have rejected your fatherly guidance

and have gotten lost altogether.

To you belongs righteousness, O Lord,

and to us confusion of face.

O Lord, great God,

all holy, filled with awe,

Father, most gracious,

filled with mercy and steadfast love,

incline your ear to our troubles.

Hear us when we pour out our sorrows before you.

Forgive us,

not on the ground of our own righteousness,

but on the ground of your great mercy.

On the ground of your great mercy

in the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ.

It is in his name that we pray,

for he is our saviour and the mediator of the covenant of grace.

ALL:

Amen.

SILENT CONFESSION

WORDS OF ASSURANCE

—John 3:16-17, NRSV

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him

may not perish but may have eternal life.

Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world,

but in order that the world might be saved through him

SONG OF ASSURANCE - AMAZING GRACE (MY CHAINS ARE GONE)

(© 2006 Vamos Publishing. CCLI # 4768151)

Amazing grace how sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me

I once was lost but now I'm found

Was blind but now I see

'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear

And grace my fears relieved

How precious did that grace appear

The hour I first believed

My chains are gone I've been set free

My God my Saviour has ransomed me

And like a flood His mercy rains

Unending love amazing grace

The Lord has promised good to me

His word my hope secures

He will my shield and portion be

As long as life endures

The earth shall soon dissolve like snow

The sun forbear to shine

But God who called me here below

Will be forever mine

Will be forever mine

You are forever mine

GOD COMMUNES

SCRIPTURE READING

James 4:1-12

Submit Yourselves to God

1 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

4 You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:

“God opposes the proud

but shows favour to the humble.”

7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

11 Brothers and sisters, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against a brother or sister or judges them speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. 12 There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the one who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbour?

SONG OF RESPONSE - TURN YOUR EYES UPON JESUS

(© Words: Public Domain, Music: 2018 Centricity Music Publishing , CentricSongs, See You At The Pub , Flychild Publishing, and So EssentialTunes)

Turn your eyes upon Jesus

Look full in His wonderful face

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim

In the light of His glory and grace

O soul are you weary and troubled

No light in the darkness you see

There's light for a look at the Saviour

And life more abundant and free

Through death into life everlasting

He passed and we follow Him there

Over us sin no more hath dominion

For more than conquerors we are

His word shall not fail you He promised

Believe Him and all will be well

Then go to a world that is dying

His perfect salvation to tell

COMMUNION

PRAYER FOR THOSE SEARCHING FOR TRUTH

Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life.  Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the reality of who you are.  Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing and that leads to the life you promise.  Amen.

PRAYER OF BELIEF

Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope.  I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserved in order to offer me complete forgiveness. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Saviour and Lord.  Amen.

GOD COMMISSIONS

BENEDICTION

—based on 2 Corinthians 4:6, NIV

May almighty God,

who caused light to shine out of darkness,

shine in our hearts, cleansing us from all our sins,

and restoring us to the light of the knowledge of God’s glory, in the face of Jesus Christ, our saviour. Amen.
